General education only — not personalized financial advice, not a policy recommendation. Rules and limits change: verify on IRDAI / Bima Bharosa before acting. We rank no companies and take no commissions.

Insurance, explained honestly — before you buy, not after a shock

Do you need it? How much is enough? What will they NOT pay? Answers with real math — free, no spam calls, no company rankings.

Why this section exists (30 seconds)

Most insurance content in India is written to sell you a policy — comparison sites earn commission per sale, so their 'advice' can never say 'you don't need this' or 'this cheap plan is a trap'. These guides do the opposite: needs first, math second, products never ranked.

  • No company names, no rankings, no lead forms, no callback spam.
  • Every money claim pairs with a worked example you can verify.
  • Every process ends at an official link (IRDAI, Bima Bharosa, Ombudsman) — not at us.

Pehle check karo: kya tumhara cover FREE me mil sakta hai?

Policy kharidne se pehle ye teen muft/planned cover check karo — 33% Bharat already covered hai aur bahuton ko pata bhi nahi: (1) Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY — SECC-2011 parivaron + 70 saal se upar HAR nagrik (income irrelevant) ko ₹5 lakh salana cashless cover, 38,000+ empanelled hospitals, pre-existing Day 1 se covered. Check: beneficiary.nha.gov.in ya 14555. (2) State top-ups — kai rajya ₹10–25 lakh tak badhate hain; apne rajya ki scheme dekho. (3) Employer cover + sasta super top-up ka combo — deductible base policy sambhalti hai, top-up bada cover deta hai.

  • 70+ ke ghar me koi hai? Vay Vandana card sabse pehla kaam.
  • PM-JAY card + retail policy = deductible stacking possible; dono ko ek-dusre se chhupao mat.
  • Empanelled hospital hi cashless deta hai — app/helpline se pehle verify karo.

Do policies compare karo 15 minute me (bina ranking ke)

Kisi bhi do policies ko is checklist par rakho — jo 5 me se zyada jeete, wahi shortlist. Koi brand naam ki zaroorat nahi:

  • Claim settlement + repudiation pattern (IRDAI handbook data) — sirf ratio nahi, reject-kyu bhi.
  • Tumhare SHEHER me network hospitals ki ginti (national count bekar hai).
  • Waiting periods (PED + specific, max 36 mahine) — chhota behtar.
  • Co-pay %, room-rent cap, sub-limits — sasti quote yahin chhupi hoti hai.
  • Exclusions + free-look 30 din + premium 5-saal projection.

Kisan ho? Fasal bima + mandi, ek saath

Sahayak ke mandi guides par faslon ke bhaav dekhte ho to fasal bima bhi dekho: PMFBY me tumhara premium hissa sirf ~2%/1.5% hai. Bunai se pehle CSC/bank se enroll karo, nuksan par 72 ghante me suchna do.

  • Season shuru hote hi enrollment deadline nikal jati hai — calendar pehle dekho.
  • Mandi bhaav + fasal bima = aamdani ke dono chhor covered.

Kisan? Fasal ke bhaav yahan, fasal bima upar — dono Sahayak par.

Common questions

Mujhe insurance chahiye bhi ya nahi? / Do I actually need insurance right now?
Health insurance: almost certainly yes. Term life: only if someone depends on your income or would inherit your loans — unmarried, no dependents, no loans usually means not urgent. That honest 'not yet' is exactly what sellers won't tell you.
Company ka group cover hai, phir bhi policy lu? / I have employer cover — still buy my own?
Group cover ends with the job. Buy a personal policy while you're young and healthy — waiting until after a diagnosis means exclusions, loading, or rejection. Size it as a top-up over the employer cover.
Kitne ka cover lu? / How much sum insured / cover do I need?
Health: ₹5–10 lakh starting range (₹10L+ in metros). Term life: 10–15x annual income + loans − assets. Both are ranges, not precise formulas — use the calculators on this site for your numbers.
Floater lu ya alag-alag policy? / Family floater or individual policies?
Floater = one shared pool for the whole family (cheaper, but one big claim can empty it for everyone that year). Individual = each person gets the full cover (costlier, no sharing risk). Senior parents usually deserve a separate plan.
Term plan lu ya money-back/endowment? / Term or money-back plan?
Term = cheapest protection per rupee, nothing back if you survive. Endowment/money-back = protection + savings mixed, much costlier premium, money back later — but effective returns are usually lower than term-plus-separate-investment. Ask the seller to split the two parts in writing.
