Interest is below the TDS threshold for one bank in a year — no TDS by the bank, but tax still applies as per your slab.

TDS thresholds (Budget 2025, w.e.f. 1 Apr 2025): ₹50,000/year per bank for general depositors, ₹1,00,000/year for senior citizens (Sec 194A).

What is this tool?

A Fixed Deposit (FD) locks a lump sum for a fixed time at a fixed rate. A Recurring Deposit (RD) builds the same habit monthly when you have no lump sum yet. This calculator shows maturity, interest and invested amount for both — plus a tax hint — so you can compare before locking money in.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick FD or RD at the top. Move a slider — or tap the number box and type.
  2. FD: enter lump sum, rate, tenure, compounding (quarterly is the Indian default) and payout type.
  3. RD: enter monthly amount, rate and months. Quarterly compounding is the Indian standard.

FD vs RD — which is better for what

An FD and RD at the 'same' interest rate do NOT give you the same return. The quoted rate looks identical, but in an RD your money enters month by month — so the average money in the bank is far lower. Example: ₹1,20,000 as FD @7% for 1 year ≈ ₹1,28,623 (interest ≈ ₹8,623). The same ₹10,000/month as RD @7% for 12 months ≈ ₹1,24,624 (interest ≈ ₹4,624). Same rate, nearly half the interest — because of when the money actually sits in the bank.

Your money is insured up to ₹5 lakh per bank (DICGC) — most people don't know this

All bank deposits in India — savings, FD and RD — are insured by DICGC, an RBI subsidiary, up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank. That ₹5 lakh covers principal + interest combined, not principal plus interest on top.

The cover is identical at every bank type — SBI and a small finance bank get the exact same ₹5 lakh. So the safety question is never 'which bank is safe' — it is 'is my amount within ₹5 lakh at this bank'. All your deposits at one bank (FD + RD + savings) are added together before the limit.

Split smartly: the ₹5 lakh limit applies separately to each bank. Keep each bank's holding (principal + expected interest) under ₹5 lakh across 2–3 DICGC-insured banks and the full amount stays insured. Always check the bank displays the DICGC leaflet, and re-check this limit before deciding — a hike has been under discussion.

Why small finance banks pay 0.5–1% more — and what it means

Small finance banks (Suryoday, Equitas, Jana, Ujjivan, Unity, AU and others) are newer and smaller, so they offer higher FD/RD rates to attract deposits.

Up to the ₹5 lakh DICGC limit they are exactly as safe as SBI — the insurance is identical. The extra 1% genuinely benefits you only while you stay inside the insured limit at that bank. Above ₹5 lakh at one bank, chase safety first (split banks), rate second.

Tax on FD & RD interest (both fully taxable)

FD and RD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate — there is no special flat rate. Banks deduct 10% TDS once interest from that bank crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year (₹1,00,000 for senior citizens, 60+) under Section 194A — Budget 2025 limits effective 1 April 2025. No PAN means 20% TDS.

TDS is not your final tax. If your total income is below the taxable limit, submit Form 15G (below 60) or 15H (senior citizens) at the bank each April to stop TDS entirely. If TDS was cut and your liability is lower (or zero), claim it back in your ITR; if higher, pay the difference.

Senior citizens: up to ₹50,000 interest deduction under 80TTB in the old regime. NRIs: NRE FD interest is tax-free in India; NRO FD interest is taxed with ~30% TDS plus cess (treaty/DTAA variations apply — general info only).

Breaking an FD/RD early — read this before locking 5 years

Unlike loans (RBI banned most prepayment penalties), premature-withdrawal rules are set by each bank. Typically the bank pays a lower rate — commonly 0.5–1% below your promised rate or the rate for the period actually held, whichever is lower — plus sometimes a flat penalty fee.

Before chasing a slightly higher 5-year rate, ask in writing: premature rate, penalty fee, and partial-withdrawal option. Keep emergency money in a short FD or savings, not in the long lock-in.

What banks don't tell you (FD & RD)

The quoted RD rate and FD rate look the same but pay very differently — RD money enters monthly, so average balance is lower. Compare maturity amounts, never headline rates.

Safety is about amount per bank, not which bank. ₹3 lakh FD + ₹3 lakh RD at one bank = ₹6 lakh, only ₹5 lakh insured. Split across banks to stay fully covered.

Interest is taxable every year even in cumulative FDs (accrual basis). Plan TDS with 15G/15H in April — don't wait for the bank to cut it.

Common FD & RD questions

FD aur RD mein kya fark hai, konsa behtar hai? / What's the difference between FD and RD, which is better?

Lump sum already in hand (bonus, maturity, sale) → FD. Monthly salary with no lump sum → RD builds discipline. At the same rate, an FD pays more total interest because the full money works from day one.

Kya chhoti finance bank mein paisa rakhna safe hai? / Is it safe to keep money in a small finance bank?

Yes — up to ₹5 lakh per bank (principal + interest) every DICGC-insured bank has identical cover, big or small. Stay inside the limit at that bank; split larger sums across banks.

FD par kitna tax lagta hai? / How much tax applies on FD interest?

Interest is added to income and taxed at your slab. Bank deducts 10% TDS above ₹50,000/year per bank (₹1,00,000 for seniors, Budget 2025). TDS is adjustable in your ITR — it is not the final tax.

₹5 lakh se zyada paisa kaise safe rakhein? / How do I keep more than ₹5 lakh fully insured?

Split across 2–3 different DICGC-insured banks, keeping principal + expected interest under ₹5 lakh at each. Same-bank deposits are clubbed before the limit.

FD time se pehle todne par kya hota hai? / What happens if I withdraw my FD early?

You get a lower rate (typically 0.5–1% less) and sometimes a flat fee — rules vary by bank. Get the premature terms in writing before locking a long tenure.

Form 15G/15H kya hai aur kab bharna chahiye? / What is Form 15G/15H and when should I submit it?

Declaration to stop TDS when total income is below taxable limit — 15G below 60 years, 15H for seniors. Submit at each bank every April; valid one financial year.

Senior citizens ko FD par extra interest milta hai kya? / Do senior citizens get extra FD interest?

Yes — most banks pay ~0.50% extra to seniors, plus a higher TDS threshold (₹1,00,000/year) and 80TTB deduction up to ₹50,000 in the old regime.
