Total capital-gains tax

₹1,08,550

First ₹1,25,000 of equity LTCG per year is exempt. No exemption for STCG or other assets.

Debt MFs bought on/after 1 Apr 2023 are taxed at slab rate, not here. Property bought before 23 Jul 2024 may choose 20%-with-indexation vs 12.5% — confirm with a tax professional.

FD/RD interest? Wrong tool — it is slab-rate 'other sources' income. Use the Old-vs-New calculator instead.

Equity rates table — holding period decides everything

Listed shares and equity mutual funds with STT paid: sold within 12 months = STCG at 20% flat with zero exemption (even ₹1 of gain is taxed). Held over 12 months = LTCG at 12.5% flat, but only on gains above ₹1.25 lakh in that financial year. No indexation on equity, ever.

Short-term (STCG)Long-term (LTCG)
Listed equity + equity MF (STT paid)≤ 12 months · 20% flat · no exemption> 12 months · 12.5% above ₹1.25L/yr
Gold / unlisted / foreign shares< 24 months · slab rate≥ 24 months · 12.5% no indexation
Debt MF (bought on/after 1 Apr 2023)Always slab rate — no LTCG bucket
Property (bought on/after 23 Jul 2024)< 24 months · slab rate≥ 24 months · 12.5% no indexation
Property (bought before 23 Jul 2024)< 24 months · slab rateResident: 12.5% no-index OR 20% with index

Without STT (off-market transfers), these special rates do not apply — gains fall back to slab rate or Section 112. Both legs (buy and sell) must carry STT for the 20%/12.5% rates.

The ₹12-lakh trap: 87A rebate never covers capital gains

Example: ₹11 lakh salary + ₹2 lakh equity LTCG looks like 'under ₹12 lakh' — but it is NOT tax-free. Salary uses slabs (and the rebate), while the ₹2 lakh LTCG is taxed at 12.5% flat (minus the ₹1.25L exemption) plus 4% cess, regardless of total income.

Rule: first split income into slab-rate part and special-rate part, then tax each separately. This single mistake causes the most shock at filing time.

SIP, mutual funds and ELSS — how SIP gains are taxed

A SIP has no special tax of its own: every monthly installment is treated as a separate investment with its own 12-month clock. Units held over 12 months at redemption = LTCG (12.5% above ₹1.25L/yr); younger units = STCG at 20%. So a 2-year SIP sells as a mix of both — your statement splits it automatically.

ELSS (tax-saving MF) adds a 3-year lock-in per installment — you cannot sell or harvest before that. Equity MF redemptions carry 0.001% STT on sale value, which is what unlocks the 20%/12.5% rates.

Source: Sec 111A/112A per-unit holding rule; ELSS lock-in per scheme terms.

Legal yearly technique: harvesting the ₹1.25L exemption

The ₹1.25 lakh LTCG exemption is per person, per financial year, across all equity sales combined — not per share or per fund. Booking gains up to this limit each year and reinvesting legally resets cost and keeps long-term tax at zero.

It only works for LTCG (held over 12 months). STCG has no exemption to harvest — every rupee is taxed at 20%.

Source: Sec 112A — ₹1.25L annual exemption, per person per FY.

Debt funds, gold and unlisted shares

Debt mutual funds bought on or after 1 April 2023 are always taxed at your slab rate — no LTCG bucket exists for them, so this calculator's 12.5% box does not apply. (Funds bought before that date: 24-month holding, generally 12.5%.)

Gold, unlisted shares and foreign shares: short-term (under 24 months) at slab rate; long-term (over 24 months) at 12.5% without indexation. SGBs held to 8-year maturity are fully tax-exempt.

Property sales — verify with a professional before you sell

Property LTCG (held over 24 months) is 12.5% without indexation for purchases on or after 23 July 2024. For land or building bought before that date, a resident individual/HUF may choose per property: 12.5% without indexation OR 20% with indexation, whichever is lower.

On a large property deal the wrong choice costs lakhs — confirm with a tax professional, and ask about Section 54/54EC reinvestment relief (54/54F capped at ₹10 crore, 54EC at ₹50 lakh) before the sale, not after.

Which ITR form, surcharge and cess

ITR-1 (Sahaj) only if your sole gain is equity LTCG up to ₹1.25 lakh with no losses to carry. Any STCG, bigger LTCG or other assets → ITR-2; with business income → ITR-3. Report ISIN, buy/sell dates and grandfathered cost in Schedule CG.

Surcharge on capital gains is capped at 15% in both regimes, then 4% health-and-education cess on top. VDA/crypto is separate: 30% flat, no exemption, no set-off.

What is this tool?

This calculator taxes each gain the way the law does: equity STCG (sold within 12 months) at 20% flat, equity LTCG (held longer) at 12.5% only above the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption, and other long-term assets (gold, unlisted shares, old debt funds) at 12.5% flat — all plus 4% cess. It keeps slab income and capital gains separate, because the 87A rebate never covers gains.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter each gain separately: short-term equity profit, long-term equity profit, and other long-term profit (gold, unlisted shares, pre-Apr-2023 debt MF).
  2. Watch the per-asset tax cards, then the total. Equity LTCG under ₹1.25L in a year correctly shows zero tax.
  3. FD/RD interest does not belong here — it is slab-rate income. Use the Old-vs-New calculator for that.

Capital gains questions

I sold shares after 8 months — which box?

Equity STCG (20% flat, no exemption). The 12-month holding line decides STCG vs LTCG for listed equity with STT paid.

My equity LTCG is ₹1 lakh — tax?

Zero. The first ₹1.25 lakh of equity LTCG per financial year is exempt across all your equity sales combined.

Which ITR form for capital gains?

ITR-1 only if your sole gain is equity LTCG up to ₹1.25L with no losses. Any STCG, bigger LTCG or other assets → ITR-2 (or ITR-3 with business income).
