How to Apply for a Ration Card Online in 2026
State-wise online ration card application guide. Documents, fees (Rs. 5-45), APL vs BPL vs AAY explained, and how to check status.
A ration card is one of the most useful documents an Indian family can have. It lets you buy subsidised rice, wheat, sugar, and kerosene — plus it counts as a family address proof. Applying is much easier than it used to be. Here's how.
Who needs a ration card?
Any Indian family that:
- Doesn't already have one (only ONE card per family)
- Has all family members' Aadhaar
- Has a permanent address in a state for at least 1 year
The three types of ration cards
- AAY (Antyodaya) — poorest of the poor. Get 35 kg grain per family at Rs. 3/kg (rice) & Rs. 2/kg (wheat).
- BPL (Below Poverty Line) — lower income. Get 5 kg per person at subsidised rates.
- APL (Above Poverty Line) — everyone else. Get 5 kg per person at slightly higher rates.
Your family income determines which one you get:
- AAY: less than Rs. 15,000/year
- BPL: less than Rs. 27,000/year (rural) or Rs. 30,000 (urban)
- APL: anything above
Documents you need
- All family members' Aadhaar — this is mandatory. No exceptions.
- Head of family's passport photo
- Address proof — electricity bill, water bill, or rent agreement
- Income certificate (only for BPL/AAY; APL doesn't need it)
- Cancelled cheque in the head of family's name (for direct benefit transfer)
If you already have an old ration card and want to split (e.g., after marriage), attach a copy of that too.
Where to apply — state-wise portals
If your state isn't listed, use the national portal nfsa.gov.in and it will redirect you.
The 8 steps to apply
1. Open your state's portal.
2. Register with your mobile OTP.
3. Choose New Ration Card Application.
4. Add family members one by one. Each needs their Aadhaar number.
5. Upload the head of family's photo.
6. Select card type (APL/BPL/AAY) based on your income.
7. Upload documents (each below 200 KB).
8. Pay the fee — Rs. 5 to Rs. 45 depending on the state.
Note the application number carefully.
After you apply
- A food inspector visits your home in 15-30 days
- They verify family members, Aadhaar links, and address
- After verification (30-90 days total), you can collect the ration card from your local ration shop OR download the digital card
Common mistakes to avoid
Adding a person who has an Aadhaar in another family's card — the system auto-rejects because each Aadhaar can be linked to only one ration card.
Wrong income declaration — food inspectors do cross-check with electricity consumption and 2-wheeler/4-wheeler ownership. Lying about income is a criminal offence.
Skipping Aadhaar linking — some states will not release grain if any family member's Aadhaar isn't linked to the card.
Paying agents — the fee is legally Rs. 5-45. Anything above is a scam.
What to do if verification is stuck
- If 60 days pass without a food inspector visit, file a grievance at your state's portal
- Or go to your local Tehsildar office with your application number
- Or write to your state's Food Commissioner via post
After you get the ration card
- Link it with your Aadhaar (mandatory)
- Enable One Nation, One Ration Card (ONORC) — lets you buy ration in any state; useful for migrants
- Never sell the card. That's a punishable offence.
That's it. In 30-90 days, you'll have a card that saves your family thousands of rupees every year.
