Aadhaar Bank Seeding for DBT: Check & Fix NPCI Link
Scholarship, PM Kisan or pension not credited? Check which bank your Aadhaar is mapped to, seed the right account for DBT, and fix NPCI mapper errors.
Most government money in India — scholarships, PM Kisan, pensions, LPG subsidy, MGNREGA wages — is now paid through Aadhaar-based DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). The government doesn't send it to "your account number"; it sends it to whichever bank account your Aadhaar is mapped to in the NPCI mapper. If that mapping is missing or points to an old account, your money doesn't arrive or goes to the wrong account. Here's how to check and fix it.
Linking vs seeding: they're not the same
- Aadhaar linking (KYC): your bank has your Aadhaar for KYC. Almost every account has this.
- Aadhaar seeding (DBT mapping): your bank has told NPCI that this account should receive DBT payments for your Aadhaar. Only one account can be mapped at a time.
You can link Aadhaar to five bank accounts for KYC, but DBT goes only to the one account seeded in the NPCI mapper.
How to check your Aadhaar bank seeding status
1. Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and log in with your Aadhaar number and OTP.
2. Click Bank Seeding Status.
3. The screen shows the bank your Aadhaar is mapped to, the status (active or inactive) and the date of mapping.
You can also check through the NPCI website's consumer section ("Aadhaar Mapper Status"), or by dialling ***99*99*1#** from your registered mobile on some networks.
How to seed Aadhaar to the account you want
At the bank branch
1. Take your Aadhaar and passbook to the branch.
2. Ask for the Aadhaar seeding / NPCI mapping consent form for DBT.
3. Sign the consent. The bank uploads the mapping to NPCI, usually within 2–7 days.
Through net banking or the bank's app
Many banks let you seed Aadhaar online under "Update Aadhaar" or "Link Aadhaar for DBT". Look for an option that mentions DBT or NPCI, not just KYC.
India Post Payments Bank (IPPB)
If your regular bank is slow, an IPPB account is one of the fastest ways to get DBT working. The postman can open it at home with your Aadhaar and fingerprint, and the account is usually seeded for DBT at opening.
Common problems and how to fix them
"Aadhaar not seeded" in your scholarship or PM Kisan status
Your account isn't mapped in the NPCI mapper. Seed it at your bank and recheck after a week.
Money went to an old account
The latest mapping wins. If you seeded an old account years ago and never updated it, payments go there. Seed your current account and give the bank written consent to override the old mapping.
"Inactive" mapping
This happens when the account is closed or dormant. Reactivate the account (do a transaction or update KYC) or seed another active account.
Name mismatch
If your name in Aadhaar and the bank account is spelled differently, seeding can fail. Correct the name in one of them first.
Joint account
Aadhaar can be seeded to a joint account if you're one of the holders. Some schemes, like many scholarships, prefer an account in the student's own name.
Why this matters for students
Central scholarships such as the post-matric SC/ST/OBC schemes are paid by Aadhaar-based DBT. A student's application can be fully approved and still show "payment failed" only because the bank account isn't seeded. Seed your account before you apply, and recheck at the start of each academic year.
Frequently asked questions
Can my Aadhaar be seeded to two accounts for DBT?
No. Only one account can receive DBT through the NPCI mapper at any time.
Does seeding cost money?
No. Banks don't charge for Aadhaar seeding for DBT.
How long does seeding take to show?
Usually 2–7 working days after the bank uploads it. Check on the UIDAI site after a week.
Can I seed Aadhaar to a minor's account?
Yes. Minors can have bank accounts with a guardian, and the minor's Aadhaar can be seeded for DBT, which is common for scholarships.
My bank says it's seeded but the UIDAI site shows another bank — what now?
The UIDAI/NPCI mapper is what DBT uses. Ask your bank to re-upload the mapping with your consent, and check again after a few days.
Check if a DBT payment was sent
If your seeding looks right but the money hasn't arrived, check PFMS → Know Your Payments (pfms.nic.in). Enter your bank name and account number and verify with an OTP. It shows every government payment sent to that account, with the scheme name, date and status — including payments that failed and why.
Common failure reasons shown on PFMS are "Account closed", "Aadhaar not mapped", "Invalid account" and "Account frozen / KYC pending". Each points to a fix at your bank.
Tips for students and pensioners
- Open the account in the student's or pensioner's own name where the scheme requires it.
- Keep the account active with at least one transaction every few months, so it doesn't go dormant.
- After changing banks, seed the new account before closing the old one, so no payment is lost in between.
